Saint Lucia’s musical landscape is as rich and vibrant as its cultural heritage. Each year, the island’s artistes release a bevy of musicaldelights on a variety of local and regional beats, referred to as “riddims.”
In Saint Lucia, Calypso is a crowd generating spectacle. With over 145 registered Calypsonians, this genre is utilized as a social commentary tool, wherein Calypsonians weave tales of tragedy and triumph, fiscal hardships and personal breakthroughs. Presented through five major tents, (so named for Calypso’s original showings under tenting) South Calypso Tent, Soca Village, Ambassadors, Take Over Tent and NG Soca Stage, Calypso showings span the entire island. Each tent produces songs to be judged during the semi, quarter and finals rounds of the annual Calypso Monarch Competition.
The reigning Calypso Monarch is Minelle. Notable Saint Lucian monarchs include: The Invader, The Ashanti, Davis, Wally, Educator, Lady Spice, Jackson, Pelay, Herb Black, Bingo, Mary G. and Nintus.
Calypso Monarch Finals will take place on July 19th at the Beausejour Cricket Grounds.
Undeniably the pulse of the Caribbean region, Soca music’s upbeat tempos has made it the music of mas.
In Saint Lucia, annual Groovy and Power Soca Monarch competitions are held to determine the best offerings each year. Unlike Calypso, Soca artistes do not generally showcase their music as part of tents, however quarter and semifinals rounds are held to narrow the field of competition. From humble beginnings in 1997, the competitions have grown to become key components of the St. Lucian Carnival experience.
